15 Topic: Adventure
When
was the last time you felt adventurous?
When we're young, the ups and
downs of life consistently include hefty doses of excitement. We get to
experience new things and meet new people at almost every turn. We're on a
roller-coaster and it's never boring.
As we age, we sometimes begin to
take this glorious world for granted, until one day we wake up and realize it's
been a while since we've done anything different from the day before. We've
switched to the merry-go-round view of life.
It can happen to anyone.
Life can seem to lose it's luster and we watch ourselves getting stagnated and
grumpy. We can then begin looking for faults (in ourselves and others), just so
we'll have something exciting to talk about.
It may be time to ask
yourself some questions. Do you always drive the same route to work? Do you
always read one part of the newspaper first? How many ways can you change your
daily routines, to be outside of any routine at all?
In the exercise
section, you'll find some ideas of how you might live with a bit more adventure.
Once you begin to focus on life's joyful adventures, you'll begin to have fun
with life, and look forward to what the future holds.

15 Exercise: Adventure
EXERCISE
FOR THESE TWO WEEKS: These two weeks, let's spend some time searching
for a bit of healthy adventure. I'll list some ideas below, but use your
imagination and find how many ways you can live your life DIFFERENTLY these next
two weeks. Any change might bring some miraculous results and make life feel
bright and new.
- Take a different route to work
- Buy a different style when you buy new clothes
- Eat at a different place for lunch
- Sponsor a child or give to a different charity than usual
- Stop by a senior home and meet a few interesting people who may have lost
their sense of adventure too
- If your funds allow, take a trip to a place you've never been to before
- Or take a trip to the place where you were born and re-live old times
- Go to the pet store and play with the puppies
- Put aside your shyness and talk to a new neighbor when on your next walk
- Join a dating (or other) club to meet new people
- Take a class at community college to remember the joy of learning something
new
- Do meditation and other self-exploration to learn more about yourself. After
all, you're the greatest adventure in your life, and the most fascinating person
you'll ever get to know.

me? Do I think everyone is having more fun than I am? What kind of people
have fun, adventurous lives? What makes me afraid to try new things? Do I
feel old and in a rut or young and full of life? What have I always wanted to
do/try? What kind of person have I always wanted to be? Do I think all of
life's fun adventures are behind me?

biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your
dreams.”

able to say a hearty yes to your adventure. "

"I learned that the richness of life is found in adventure. . . . It
develops self-reliance and independence. Life then teems with excitement. There
is stagnation only in security."
William Orville Douglas
"The
test of an adventure is that when you're in the middle of it, you say to
yourself, ''Oh, now I've got myself into an awful mess; I wish I were sitting
quietly at home.'' And the sign that something's wrong with you is when you sit
quietly at home wish."
Thornton Wilder
"It is only in adventure
that some people succeed in knowing themselves - in finding
themselves."
