6 Topic: "How can I feel the best in this situation?"
I
was at the grocery store recently on a very windy day. As I was getting out of
the van, my door got away from me and slammed into the vehicle next to me.
Lovely. I surveyed the damage, and saw a scrape, but also a slight dent.
"Great", I mumbled to myself "and I'm always so careful...".
I felt the
beginning of nerves and negative thoughts coming to me. My stomach began to
shiver a bit from the fearful thoughts it undoubtedly knew were on their way. I
took a few deep breaths and thought about the situation.
"It isn't that
bad, maybe I should just go" "No, it's my fault, I did it, it would be wrong
to just leave" "But I can't afford to pay for this, and what if I have to pay
my huge deductible to get his vehicle fixed?"
I realized that what was
most important TO ME in that moment was that I feel good again. It sounds
selfish, I know, but acknowledging that we all want to feel good is a positive
first step in all of our decision-making.
I asked myself "how can I feel
the best in this situation?"
Of course I knew what I needed to do. I
wrote out a note and left my insurance information on his windshield and went
home, repeating to my doubting self "I did the right thing, I did the right
thing..."
I got the lovliest call from the owner of the car the next day.
He thanked me for leaving the note and marveled at the fact that I left one at
all, saying that "most people wouldn't have". Because of my willingness to take
responsibility, he said he would only ask me to pay a small part of the fix
($50). I thanked him and he thanked me again, and it turned out to be a quite
pleasant experience. I'm not sure how it would have turned out if I had chosen
to feel any other way but GOOD. I knew what decisions I needed to make to feel
the best in that situation, so I did it. The results speak for
themselves
I hear a lot from people lately about their fears. It seems
that our fears are driving us to distraction. Of course we know about the fears
of the economy, but now we have this lovely swine flu to focus our fears on as
well.
I'm not going to suggest that we close our eyes to what is going on
around us COMPLETELY, but I am going to suggest that we try a slightly different
focus for a while.

6 Exercise: "How can I feel the best in this situation?"
When
any fear or doubt arises this week:
- Consciously take deep breaths
- Tell yourself "everything is going to be all right"
- If your stomach quakes with nervousness, stroke it gently as you would a
child's and say "it's all right, everything is okay, I love you"
- Ask yourself "how can I feel the best in this situation?"
- Listen to your heart
- Visualize only the very best outcomes
- Feel what it would feel like if the very best outcomes came true
- Get physical. Any physical exertion helps take your mind off of your worries
and brings healthy circulation to your brain and heart. I take a walk and ride
on my bike for 45 minutes each day.
- Intend the best for everyone else and that their fears also subside and
transform into joy and confidence
