August 23 Topic: "Avoiding Avoidance"
Why do we avoid the things in life that we say we want to do (or be)? A few excuses that come to mind:
  • I have too much going on
  • It will take way too long
  • I may do it wrong
  • I haven't decided the perfect way to do it yet
  • I need to wait until I have "this other project" finished first
  • I would need professional help to do this; I can't do it on my own... and so on

For this issue I'd like to focus on that 2nd excuse up there. Lately I've been finishing a lot of projects that I've had on my "To-Do-This-Summer" list. I had avoided some of them for many weeks, thinking "It will take way too long".

EVERY item on my list has taken about 1/4 of the time I had somehow tricked my brain into thinking it would take.

It's really true that it wastes MORE time when we postpone something, than if we just go ahead and do it, because we waste so much time worrying about it and making it appear an even bigger mountain to climb.

I completed a couple of projects recently which both involved taking pictures. I got some new publicity pictures taken (new pics on my web site). I also created a Personal Results page on the Cambridge part of my web site.

While I still have a lot more weight to drop, just stopping a moment to look back at my "before" picture, and comparing it to pictures which show my 45-pound weight loss, was the motivation I needed to keep going. Here is the link to my results page. Sharon's Results Page

I also recently wrote an article for No Limits' free online magazine. I titled it "Love Your Body... One Day at a Time". It's not just about weight loss, it's about how we can use some simple tools to focus positively on ourselves, every day. I hope you'll take a moment to check it out. Love Your Body... One Day at a Time

These are only a few examples of projects that I've completed recently. The great feeling of accomplishment that comes from avoiding avoidance (otherwise known as: "getting the job done"), is enough to propel us towards reaching for new goals.

What have you been avoiding? Is it time to stop avoiding?

August 23 Exercise: "Avoiding Avoidance"
EXERCISE FOR THESE TWO WEEKS:
    What have you been avoiding?

    1. Take a moment (yes you have the time!) to write down anything and everything you've been avoiding. EVERYTHING. It's freeing to the mind and relaxing to the body to get all of that out of there and onto paper.
    2. Don't worry about how and when you're going to get it all done, just write and write and write everything you've avoided, in any way. In your life, with your body, any projects, any new language you've been wanting to learn, etc.
    3. Look at your list and take ONE item off to do each day. Make it a thing that's really been bothering you the most. Or an item that is really large and seems ridiculous. The POWER you get from getting to cross that huge burden off of your list will have you quickly completing several more items before you know it.
Self-discovery Questions and Affirmations for: "Avoiding Avoidance"
SELF-DISCOVERY QUESTIONS FOR THESE TWO WEEKS:

  • What am I avoiding doing?
  • Who am I avoiding being?
  • What pay-off does avoidance give me?
  • What's the worst that could happen if I go ahead and plunge in?
  • What's the best that could happen if I go ahead and plunge in?

AFFIRMATIONS FOR THESE TWO WEEKS:

  • I'm free from avoiding life
  • I love crossing projects off of my lists
  • I love that I can do and be anything I desire
  • Today's the day I start embracing life
  • I'm so happy I'm living my life fully
  • I choose a new reality today
